University

National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) is one of the premier national level institutions for technical education in India. This was formerly known as Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC). CREC was born in September 1961 as the ninth of its kind and the first one to be established during the Third Five Year Plan period. It has been established with the idea of fostering national integration by imparting technical education to students from all over India. On the basis of the Mashelkar Committee report, the Government of India elevated Calicut Regional Engineering College to a Deemed University under the name National Institute of Technology Calicut along with the other Regional Engineering Colleges in the country in June 2002. There are 18 NITs in the country including the new NIT being setup at Patna, in Bihar. NITC is administered by a society registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1960. Under the constitution of the society, a Board of Governors governs the Institute.

NITC is located about 22 kilometers north - east of Calicut City. It stretches over a length of about 1.5 km. along the Calicut-Mukkam road, extending over an area of approximately 120 hectares. NITC can be reached from Calicut city by Mukkam road which branches off the Calicut - Mysore road (NH 212) from the 15th kilometer. The Institute is situated in Chathamangalam Panchayat which is connected to Calicut city by pivate and KSRTC(Govt) buses. The private buses start from the Palayam busstand (near to the Railway Station), with a frequency less than 5 minutes. The KSRTC buses start from the KSRTC bus station on the Indira Gandhi Road, with a frequency of 30 minutes. The taxi charges are about Rs.250/- and auto charges are about Rs.175/- .

NITC has come a long way, offering today 14 M. Tech. Programmes and Ph. D. Programmes in all departments, and an MCA Programme apart from the 6 B. Tech. Programmes and a B. Arch. Programme. The Institute has a built-up area of about 1,00,000 Sq. m. with 32% instructional buildings, 38% hostels, 20% residential and 10% amenities, and provides fully residential accommodation for all students, faculty and staff. There are seven men's hostels and two Ladies hostels.Two Men's hostels are exclusively for PG students and one International hostel for international students. Family accommodation is available for QIP scholars. Other resources include ample facilities for sports and games (indoor & outdoor), gymnasium, swimming pool, auditorium, open-air theatre, canteen, Bank, Post Office, Shopping Centre, and Health Centre.

Subsequent to becoming an NIT, the institute could witness tremendous growth in infrastructure facilities. The Institute has a well-equipped Library, a Digital library (NALANDA), 2 MBPS Internet connectivity, a Computer Centre (24 hours functional), a Lecturer Hall Complex, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Product Development Centre, Industry-Institute Linkage cell, Learning Resources Development Centre, Centre for Value Education, Laboratories, Workshops, Hostels for accommodating about 2000 students, a Health Centre and adequate facilities for Sports, Games & Co-Curricular activities. The campus also accommodates a branch of the State Bank of India (with two ATMs), a Post Office, a Cooperative Store and a Canteen. Construction of the CAD-CAM Centre and a Hostel for men are in progress. Work on a dedicated line for uninterrupted power supply to the campus is also nearing completion.

The institute also undertakes a fair amount of Research & Development work, consultancy, Continuing Education Programmes and extension services. As a prestigious institution, NITC has recognized its roles in education, generation and dissemination of knowledge, cooperating with and assisting the industry, contributing to the technological, industrial and economic development of the country and in the application of Science and Technology in the service of the society. NITC has all along endeavoured to discharge these obligations successfully. In association with the department of Science and Technology and similar organizations, the institute has also been implementing programmes such as Mass Employment Generation through Science and Technology, Entrepreneurship incentive scheme, TRYSEM, CLASS Project, etc.
