Id ul-Fitr, popularly known as Ramadan (but ideally pronounced Ramzan), falls in the seventh month of the lunar year (January- February) and is a major festival of the Muslims of Kerala.Throughout this month, Muslims observe a day-long fast. Purification of the body and soul is the main purpose of this religious rite.

Ramadan (or Ramzan) is the tenth month of Hijri or Islamic calendar. It is the holy month in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad through the archangel Gabriel, as a guide to mankind and with the signs of guidance and judgement between right and wrong.

The month of Ramadan comes once each year giving every fasting Muslim a spiritual and physical improvement which lasts until the following year.

The festival of Id ul-Fitr festival begins with the sighting of the crescent moon on the western horizon and with that the fasting ends.

The main activity of the festival is the distribution of food to the poor and needy. In the morning, devotees proceed to the mosque or Id-Gali to attend the congregational prayer led by the Imam.

It was the month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed as the word of God and the basic source of Islamic teachings and laws. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the five important religious duties of a Muslim. Along with the faith in the unity of God and in the prophetic mission of Prophet Muhammad, fasting is binding on every believer. "O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous."
